HolidayJacking - Pearl Harbor Edition
This holidayjacking pains me in part because my father’s name is Harvey, and this Harvey is letting men like my dad down. Aside from his posting a status update that’s sweeter than candied yams (and sort of makes me want to barf, like candied yams do), Harvey here is also butchering slash “modifying” the famous FDR line about Pearl Habor, which states that December 7, 1941 is “a day which will live in infamy.”
Now, I understand the appeal of twisting around famous lines to make them relevant to today (especially if you want to sound snappy on social media), but the trick is to do that when the lines aren’t in reference to a day of mass death. I’m baffled as to how so many people don’t get that. Saying “Never Forget…my baby’s birthday!” on September 11 is tacky. Changing the word “infamy” to “eternity” doesn’t alter the fact that the message was written to mimic the FDR speech. If you want to express your love for your child on her birthday, by all means, do it! Just try not to go out of your way to offend people in the process. And for the love of reflection and remembrance, don’t make a joke about your baby “dropping bombs” in his diaper on Pearl Harbor Day, either. I’d like to think that people learned that lesson last year.
